The summer blockbuster season kicks off in high style with a clever and witty modern take on the Marvel superhero comics. It is a thoroughly enjoyable film and provide an introduction befitting the mighty god of thunder.
The film has a healthy respect for the comic-book lore that turned a mythological Norse god into a founding member of the superhero team known as “The Avengers”. “Captain America : The First Avenger” will follow next before Marvel Studios set up next summer’s ensemble behemoth “The Avengers”.
Bo Welch has created spectacular designs. The digital effects are solid. The fight scenes and the stunt work are well choreographed and feel organic. Aside from its excellent visuals and its sense of fun, Thor avoids the common superhero trap of spending an age on back story before the plot kicks in.
Director Kenneth Branagh best known for his performances in Shakespeare films, now sits behind the camera directing. Branagh knows his way around an epic tale and his good taste provides ultimate accessability of Thor’s spectacular magical world. He ensures the action comes thick and fast without spending too much time on introducing the characters. Credit also goes to a star making turn from Chris Hemsworth who gives a breakout performance as fallen Norse god Thor.
The story revolves around demi-god Thor (Chris Hemsworth) who is banished from his heavenly kingdom by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins), leaving Thor’s half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) next in line to the throne. Thor lands himself in a desolate New Mexico desert where he's befriended by a group of scientists led by Jane Foster (Natalie Portman).

Thor’s superpowers is taken away and he is unable to return home until he learns humility among the humans. In the meantime, he struggles to must try to blend in and recover his weapon from government spooks. As the mighty Thor struggles to adapt to his mortality and adjusts to his surroundings, we get some solidly amusing fish-out-of-water antics.
